Palestine Joins the Global Alliance to Combat Hunger and Poverty
Palestine has joined the "Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty," launched during the G20 summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This step is a result of collaborative efforts from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and Social Development, aiming to enhance Palestine's international presence and represent the needs of the Palestinian people amidst the ongoing challenges posed by the Israeli occupation.
The alliance aims to strengthen international cooperation to eliminate hunger and poverty by 2030 through the exchange of expertise and coordinated efforts among member countries.
Palestine's participation in this alliance highlights the importance of applying international and humanitarian law and preventing the use of hunger as a weapon of war, which Israel has been practicing as part of its colonial project and genocide against the Palestinian people.
Minister of Social Development, Dr. Samah Hamad, noted that this membership will contribute to achieving sustainable development goals, particularly the first and second goals related to eradicating poverty and hunger.
Palestine seeks to enhance social protection programs, improve food security, and support the most vulnerable groups in Palestinian society by focusing on implementing national policies aimed at reducing poverty and hunger. The country also aims to strengthen international cooperation and utilize financial and technical resources available within the alliance.
This step will also help improve and expand local programs to match the Palestinian reality while sharing experiences with member countries to develop effective policies.
Dr. Hamad emphasized that ending Israeli practices that hinder development, such as the blockade on Gaza and policies preventing access to agricultural land and essential services, is a prerequisite for achieving sustainable development goals.
Through this membership, Palestine reaffirms its determination to move forward in eliminating poverty and hunger, promoting human rights, and building international partnerships that contribute to a fairer and more sustainable future. She called on the international community to pressure Israel to stop its oppressive policies and allow Palestinians to access food, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
This participation is expected to enhance cooperation with member countries of the alliance, exchange best practices, and positively impact national efforts to combat poverty and hunger in Palestine.
